Located in eastern Austria along the Danube, Vienna is Austria’s political, financial and administrative capital. Vienna is a European city that combines beauty and charm with culture, style and sophistication. Vienna is a thoroughly cosmopolitan city that offers a friendly, laid back atmosphere, ornate buildings, and a lot of history. So much so that reminders of Vienna's imperialist past, having once been the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which encompassed almost one third of Europe) are never far away. Elements of the city's past are far from glorious, but judged purely on the architectural and cultural legacy left behind, it's one that other world cities must envy. Vienna in recent years is a vast array of cultural institutionsthat have been further enhanced by projects such as the development of the MuseumsQuartier, with famous landmarks like the Karlskirche and Kunsthistoriches Museum which have been painstakingly renovated. Vienna does have modern developments which have been carefully designed to ensure that Vienna's charm and character is fully preserved for the future. Vienna has a first class public transport (including the clean and efficient metro/tram system) although you can still tour many of the city's major sights on foot, by bicycle or even horse-drawn carriage! Vienna is also known as Wien Vienna is the capital of Austria The native name of Austria is Oesterreich |

For centuries Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg Empire, and today’s Vienna (Wien) is a city full of tradition and rich in architectural, artistic and musical heritage. The Hofburg, Schönbrunn or Spanische Reitschule (Spanish Riding School) make you realise just how powerful, imposing and far reaching the Habsburg's influence really was. Vienna is split into twenty-three districts (Bezirke). Most of the top tourist attractions lie within the first district, which was formally protected by the city walls and is now circumvented by the Ringstrasse instead. Districts two through to nine are just as rich in treasures to discover, including some magnificent boutiques, galleries, theatres and palaces. The Viennese people are renowned for their taste in music and gourmet foods as well as a particular attachment to old-fashioned traditions and pride in their gorgeous surroundings. Vienna’s location means that a cruise along the Danube, a tour through the Vienna Woods or a train-ride to the Austrian Alps are all easily done.
