and typically Mediterranean climate with an average annual temperature
of 19-20 degrees centigrade.It has a wonderful 20km of sandy beaches
and seas perfect for watersports, swimming or just enjoying the sun. In 1987 the Montgo mountain was declared a National Park, with an area of 2,150 hectares in the municipal districts of Denia and Javea. The aim of the park is to protect the natural vegetation and fauna of the area, as well as to conserve the archaeological and cultural aspects. The mountain is 753 metres above sea level at its summit and on a clear day you can see the island of Ibiza. The mountain dominates the great protruding rock formation that the Marina Alta has in this area. The Town: The town of Denia itself is dominated by the castle which stands imposingly on a 66
metre-high hill at the heart of the town. The castle was built during
the 11th and 12th centuries and is Islamic in design. Since then
several modifications have been made to the architecture. The castle
is now used as the venue for a wide range of cultural event including
outdoor concerts. The town has a large number of shops and boutiques where you can find all manner of goods from leather to jewelry and souvenir shops to commemorate your visit. The markets offer a wonderful insight into the daily life of the inhabitants, the fish market open Monday to Saturday is an excellent opportunity to purchase freshly caught fish and shellfish. The street market is held on a Monday morning and here you can purchase a wide variety of products. Fiestas: During the year
there are plenty of celebrations to enliven the town. In January,
the procession of the Three Kings and the "Romeria" to the Santa
Paola hermitage. The carnival is held in the second week of February,
closely followed by the "Mig Any", the winter celebration of the
Moors and the Christians. In March there are the fallas, which celebrate
the arrival of spring, followed by the "Hogueras" of San Juan in
June which announce the coming of Summer with bonfires on the beaches. Gastronomy: Denia has a rich gastronomy, dominated by fish and rice dishes. From Denia comes the wonderfully tasty Denia red prawn which is considered by experts gourmets to be the best in the world. The fishermen catch a great variety of shellfish and fresh fish daily ready to be prepared into some of the best paellas and fish stews typical of the region.
