In the last week of July Villajoyosa really comes to life for the Moors and Christians festival which is a re-enactment of the defeat of the Algerian Pirate Zala Arráez who came to ransack the town in 1538. For seven days locals dress up as swashbuckling, gaudy, Moorish pirates or valiant Christian defenders to re-enact the valiant defence of the town. Spectacular fireworks, and lots of delicious food and drink for everyone which is great example of the Spanish fiesta.

The historic old town of Vila Joiosa is being renovated inside and out costing €2.9 million and covering 17 streets in the town centre. The drainage and drinking water systems, street lighting, telephone and communications systems and street furniture will be improved for the benefit of the citizens as well as the old buildings and housing in the area to be re-painted.
