The name Sotogrande comes from one of five farms bought by Alfredo Melian in 1962 at the request of Joseph McMicking who wished to create a luxurious residential development by the Mediterranean.

The reputation of Sotogrande and its appeal to so many nationalities lay initially in the natural beauty of the site. This was enhanced by the early landscaping, the planting of avenues of palm trees and the hiding underground of the infrastructure. Its final character however, was established by the creation of the most varied sporting facilities in Europe which include not only the famous golf courses Club de Golf Valderrama - host to the 1997 Ryder Cup, and Sotogrande Old Course - both rated amongst the top 5 in Europe, but also Polo fields, Tennis and Fronton Courts, Riding stables and a busy Sotogrande Marina - the first port of call on entering the Mediterranean.

For the sailor - Puerto Sotogrande has nearly 600 berths catering for vessels of up to 72 metres. Each berth is connected to all services including television and satellite and harbour staff are available 24 hours a day. The Sotogrande sailing school offers all the facilities required to provide expert sailing and windsurfing tuition for both the experienced and the novice.

For the rider - Polo is the other sport for which Sotogrande is rightly renowned. The Santa Maria Club is the hub of Spanish polo and stages an international tournament each August. The club’s magnificent setting and fine facilities attract top players from all over the world. There are superb stabling facilities and horses are also available for hire.

For everybody - Tennis, swimming, fishing and other keep fit and leisure activities are all catered for along with the finest supervised activities for children during holiday periods. For those who prefer less energetic pursuits, there are exclusive beach clubs, stylish restaurants and bars whilst the nearby village of Pueblo Neuvo is ideal for browsing a variety of shops.
