Lesvos or Lesbos is the third largest Greek island and has a long history that goes back more than 3.000 years. It has been the birthplace of famous people, such as the poets Alcaeos and Sappho, and Pittacus, one of the seven wise men of ancient Greece. Lesvos has a strong fishing and olive growing tradition.

Lesvos has good transport links with Athens on the mainland (daily by air) and the island of Saloncia by ferry.

Mytilene is the captial of Lesvos with over 30,000 inhabitants built around the Byzantine Castle. The Hellenistic Theatre with its superb acoustics and capacity of 10,000 people is close by.

To the northest of the island is the picturesque village of Mithymna (also known as Molivos), with historic castle and the traditional architecture. It is here that the head of Orpheus is said to have been washed ashore after his dismemberment of the Thracian women. Another mythical citizen of Mithymna was the lyric poet and musician Arion. It has been said that he has been saved by the music-loving dolphin.

Molivos is the islands best known resort.

Petra village has one of the best sandy beaches of the island.

Kalloni in the centre of the Island is famous for its sardines which are caught in the nearby bay called the Gulf of Kalloni. Skala Kalloni resort with its beautiful sandy beaches is close by.

The village of Agia Paraskevi further south has a lot of old mansions and is known for the Bull Festival that has been celebrated for more than two hundred years. Ther are ruins of an ancient temple of Napaios Apollo and the ruins of an Ionian temple dated from the 3rd century BC. This temple was dedicated to Zeus, Hera and Dionysos.

Plomari and Vatera on the south of the island is home to one of most superb beaches of the island sretching 10 Km long.

Eressos was the birth place of Sappho and Theoprastos and its port of Skala Eressos is a famous resort with a spectacular beach.

Near the town of Moria stands the Roman Aqueduct that was built in the second century AD.

Mantamados, famous for its cheeses and pottery is close to Skala Sikaminias which is a typical and traditional greek fishing village.

Sigri is also a pretty fishing village with a small beach and a castle that goes back to the 18th century. The Petrified Forest which dates back fifteen million years is nearby.
