Florence Villas, Italy

Florence spreads down the Arno Valley and onto the hills north and south of the city. The Piazza del Duomo is the site of the Duomo itself and the neighbouring Baptistry . This is the central area of Florence and has the best-preserved medieval sections. South of the duomo is Florence's outstanding sculpture gallery, the Bargello . The huge Piazza della Signoria at some 300m south of the duomo, is overlooked by the Palazzo Vecchio and the famous picture gallery of the Uffizi.

Florence is best seen indoors. were the city's artists initiated the shift from the medieval to the modern of today. Florence is known for churches, galleries and museums.

Every part of Florence can boast a church or collection worth seeing with the enormous Palazzo Pitti south of the river constituting a museum district on its own.

The Renaissance can be plotted within the huge picture collection of the Uffizi and in the sculpture of the Bargello and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.

Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella chapels were the creators of Masaccio's great frescoes in the Cappella Brancacci, and Fra' Angelico's paintings in the monks' cells at San Marco.

Brunelleschi's renaissance architecture in the churches of San Lorenz, Santo Spirito and the Cappella dei Pazzi are beautiful.

Michelangelo, the dominant creative figure of sixteenth-century Italy, is on display in the San Lorenzo's Biblioteca Laurenziana and the marble statuary of the Cappelle Medicee and the Accademia, home of the David.

To the west of duomo is the unmissable church of Santa Maria Novella. To the north of the duomo is the grand church of San Lorenzo were you will find the market stalls around the covered Mercato Centrale.

In the eastern side of the city centre is the vast Franciscan church of Santa Croce.

Northeast from San Lorenzo is the monastery of San Marco with paintings by Fra' Angelico; the Accademia and home of Michelangelo's David and Piazza Santissima Annunziata which is Florence's most attractive square.

The Oltrarno district runs by the river and where you will find more museums within the Palazzo Pitti and the church of Santo Spirito stands proudly here also.

Overlooking the city from the south is the hilltop church of San Miniato al Monte.
