Venice, Italy

Founded fifteen hundred years ago as a cluster of mudflats in the centre of the lagoon, Venice soon became Europe's main trading post between the West and the East.

The city of Venice is made up of 118 islands, which began life as small local communities, each with a parish church and a square for public meetings. There are now around 400 bridges which tie the islands together and create six large administrative districts known as sestieri, three on each side of the Canal Grande.

The boundaries of the Sestieri can be confusing but indicates the different boundaries within Venice.

Sestiere of San Marco is the zone where the majority of the main sights are clustered, and is the most expensive and most crowded area of the city. Castello is on the East with Cannaregio to the north.

On the other bank is Dorsoduro, which stretches from the fashionable quarter at the tip of the Canal Grande, south of the Accademia gallery, to the docks in the west.

Santa Croce follows the Canal Grande from Piazzale Roma to a point just short of the Rialto, where it joins the commercial area of San Polo .

The northern and southern lagoon islands are considerably quieter in comparison to the main hub of San Marco.

The Veneto is historically and economically one of Italy's most important regions. Major cities of Padua, Verona and Vicenza - are smaller towns located between the lagoon and the mountains to the north.

The northern town of Belluno is in the more central Castelfranco with lovely properties of distinct character available..

Venices treasures remain in the buildings for which they were created although many have been removed to one of Venice's museums.

The Accademia museum is spectacular with Venetian paintings that consists of virtually nothing but masterpieces and other prominent collections include the museum of eighteenth-century art in the Ca' Rezzonico and the Museo Correr.

Venice apartments and holiday homes.
