Umbria Villas, Italy

Umbria borders Tuscany and is known as the ‘green heart of Italy’, an area even more relaxed than its Tuscan neighbour.

Umbria is made up of country lanes running through hamlets, villages and even castles which remain largely unchanged over the centuries. Agriculture is rife in this peaceful part of the world with many fields cultivated with sunflowers, maize and various vegetables.

Perugia is Umbria's medieval capital which is famous for its magnificent architecture and home to one of the finest piazzas in all of Italy. The Perugia Jazz Festival, established in 1973 and held annually every July, attracts performers and aficionados from all over the world. The city also has countless fine trattorias amongst its winding streets.

Florence and Siena are easily accessible as is Rome by train or car.

Lago Trasimeno is close to many Tuscan homes which is fed by many attractive rivers and offers a variety of watersports including sailing and windsurfing as well as some excellent cuisine in the lakeshore restaurants.

Tuscany also has many monasteries which were founded by a host of local saints.

Up the slopes of Monte Fumaiolo, a small stream comes out of the ground and travels southward, gaining size and notoriety to become Rome's Tiber river. The Tiber valley runs through Florence to Rome with the towns of Assisi, Orvieto and Spoleto.

Umbria is just east of Tuscany, north of Rome and west of the Marches.

The Corso Vannucci, and the Piazza Quattro Novembre where the impressive Fontana Maggiore plays is worth seeing.

The home of St Francis, Assisi is a stirring sight as you approach across the plain. The wonderful architecture of the basilica has been used as a model for many other places of worship throughout Italy and the magnificent frescoes which adorn its walls are world famous.

Pasilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is just below Assisi and was built around the 6th Century Benedictine chapel where St Francis died. The tiny chapel remains fully intact beneath the great roof of the basilica itself.

Villas Umbria and holiday homes.
