The historic inland town of Orihuela was once the most important in the region and even boasted a university.Oriheula has many Gothic and Baroque buildings. The splendid cathedral dates from the fourteenth century and is built on the remains of the Aljama mosque, and displays a melange of architectural styles.

The diocesan museum is housed inside and includes a Velazquez masterpiece and nearby is the eighteenth century bishops palace. Two other gothic churches of note are close to the cathedral in the old quarter. The fourteenth century Santas Justa y Rafina has a fine gargoyled tower and the church of Santiago houses Baroque altarpieces.

The town university operated until 1824. It originated as a Dominican college in 1533, becoming a university in 1569. Today it is the site of a private religious school with a magnificent Baroque entrance to the old University.

The refectory of the old convent has a beautiful eighteenth century Valencian tile frieze. The seminary of San Miguel has great views of the town.

Oriheula celebrates Semana Santa with floats can be viewed in the local museum Museo Samana Santa. These include the famous Diablesa, a witch-like devil that has been terrifying townsfolk since the seventeenth century. The Moors and Christians reenactment is celebrated in July.
